Painter, jazz musician and composer Steve Pimlott studied art at
Manchester and Brighton in the late 70’s and early 80’s.
Following a career teaching art and music he now divides his considerable creative energies between painting and various musical projects.
On the surface of things they’re two very different disciplines. For me though,
the conceptual variables between them are quite indistinct.
I imagine it’s pretty clear to anyone who’s heard the music (I`ve written
or recorded) that there’s a definite art school mentality underpinning the ideas.
With the paintings, the musical influences are probably less apparent,
certainly in my earlier stuff, but the work I’m producing now seems to place more emphasis on elements such as structure, form relationships and rhythm.
